    Real Estate History Klamath Falls

    Klamath Falls, Oregon, is a small city of around 21,000 people located in the southern region of the state and situated on the edge of Upper Klamath Lake. It was founded in 1867 by George Nurse, an early settler who established a trading post near the lake and named it after his hometown in Minnesota — Klamath Falls.   

    The area quickly grew to become an important hub for Native American trade, as well as fur trapping and hunting. Over time, more settlers arrived and began farming the land, leading to greater economic growth for the town.   

    By 1900, there were several thriving businesses in Klamath Falls, including sawmills, flour mills, a tannery, and other industries. This increased demand for housing which led to the rapid growth of the real estate market. 

    The town had its first subdivision in 1910 when local developer C.J. Harvey purchased five acres from George Nurse’s widow and divided it into 25 lots. Soon afterward came many more subdivisions with homes ranging from simple cottages to elaborate Victorian-style mansions.   

    As with most towns during this period, much of Klamath Falls’ real estate development was focused around railroads and transportation hubs; two such areas were along Fifth Street (now Main Street) near downtown Klamath Falls and up north along Oregon Avenue (then known as Umatilla Avenue). 

    In addition to residential properties for sale or rent, there were also commercial buildings constructed during this time period that are still standing today, such as the historic Hotel Linkville, which opened its doors in 1912 on Main Street across from what is now City Hall Park.   

    In 1925 construction began on one of Klamath Fall’s most iconic landmarks – The Ross Ragland Theater – located at 218 N 6th St, which served as a hub for entertainment until its closure in 1983 before being restored in 2003-2004 by local residents dedicated to preserving history through theater arts programming. 

    Today it serves as an art house cinema hosting both classic films and live performances throughout the year while still maintaining many original features, such as its iconic marquee sign outside that has been part of downtown Klamath Falls since opening day!   

    Klamath Falls has continued growing over the years, with new neighborhoods popping up all over town while existing ones continue to be revitalized or remodeled; it’s also become a popular retirement destination due to its moderate climate & access to outdoor activities like fishing & hiking nearby at Crater Lake National Park just 40 miles away!
